7 event venues with a sporting flavour

There’s a special feeling reserved for the moment you wander through the gates at the races: the lush turf of the track, the bookies crunching the numbers, the thrill of the finishes that deliver a cheeky dividend. In fact, a lot of Brisbane’s sports venues can evoke a special thrill that only they seem able to muster. Which is why event planners should consider them when the brief includes a truly memorable venue.

From racing to tennis and so much more in between, we’ve found seven sports venues you should put on the scorecard when planning your next business event.

Brisbane Racing Club

Brisbane Racing Club
The Tote Room

History and classic racing moments are scattered throughout both racecourses. Racing began at Eagle Farm in 1865, and its history has been well preserved. Hidden within Eagle Farm’s oldest grandstand you’ll find beautiful function space The Laboratory, built in 1889 and, as its name suggests, a former scientific testing lab. Pack your binoculars and try upstairs in the Chief de Beers room at Doomben, where the floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the racecourse and have an excellent view of the finishing post – you won’t miss a second of race-day action.

Suncorp
The Paddington Room

There’s an unforgettable memory of Suncorp Stadium for anyone who has ever been to an event there. While it is the spiritual home of rugby league to most Queenslanders, Suncorp Stadium has played host to iconic moments from not just league, but also rugby union, soccer and even concerts. Unique options such as hosting a function in the Home Team’s Dressing Room, or a cocktail function along the Level 3 Concourse overlooking the enormous stadium, are likely to leave a lasting impression. The die-hard sports fans will love a function in the Diamond Lounge, which gives a sneak peek into the home team’s warm-up area.

Queensland Cricketers' Club

Qld Cricketer's Club

Beautiful by day and spectacular by night. That’s the only way to describe the Queensland Cricketers' Club, offering panoramic views of the iconic greens of the Gabba. The Cricketers' Club was established nearly 60 years ago to give like-minded cricket-lovers a place to come together. Add a bit of wow and organise for the stadium to be lit up at night, or give guests the opportunity to relive their favourite cricket classic catch or AFL game-winning moment as they take a walk on the Gabba field.

Note: In 2017, the club is set to undergo a dramatic transformation which will see the two current function rooms open into one large space, so keep an eye out for its completion in time for the 2017 Brisbane Lions season kick-off.

Able to cater from 10 to 1000, the options are seemingly endless here. Be it for team building or just to jazz up a party, the Putting Lounge is great with its terrace access to the putt putt course for our inner Happy Gilmores – keep an eye out for the hidden hole…

Food and drinks are delivered on course, and the golf club will also provide a golf clinic prior to commencing as well as on-course tips throughout the round. The colonial-style spaces offer natural light, fresh air and expansive views that evoke an image of what the scenery was like in 1896 when the original Hillstone homestead was built.

Queensland’s home of tennis, the Queensland Tennis Centre is host to the state’s largest annual tennis event, the Brisbane International. Pat Rafter Arena proudly stands as the centrepiece, and what better place to get people moving than on centre court? Be it for team-building activities or to give guests a chance to work on their serve, anyone who steps on to the court is likely to channel their inner Federer or Nadal – two legends who have played on that very surface. Its location along a leafier section of the Brisbane River in Tennyson is like a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of the inner city that is only 15 minutes away.
