Brisbane jeweller honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award at 2017 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards

Jeweller Wallace Bishop was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards; recognition of his long career and role in shaping Brisbane’s CBD business precincts.

“Wallace Bishop is a highly revered fixture in the Brisbane and Australian jewellery sectors,” Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said.

“Mr Bishop became a watchmaker in 1950 and, along with son Stuart, still heads a company now celebrating its 100th year. That’s a remarkable achievement and one I am very pleased to honour.”

Born in 1934, Wallace is the grandson of the original Wallace Bishop, who founded the jewellery company in 1917.

During the establishment of the Queen Street Mall in the 1980s, Mr Bishop was a key member of the Brisbane Mall Advisory Committee and had a large influence on the development of the major retail precinct.

Under his leadership, Wallace Bishop increased from three Brisbane City-based stores to the current 56-store operation in Queensland and New South Wales.

“I always knew I wanted to follow in my father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and be involved in the company,” Mr Bishop said.

“My proudest achievement is how Wallace Bishop has maintained its reputation for quality and service since 1917 and over four generations.

“As we celebrate 100 years of operation it means so much to our family to be recognised in the Lord Mayor's Business Awards.

“The Lifetime Achievement Award is a lovely affirmation of our company’s role as an integral part of Brisbane’s business community during this special year."

The Lord Mayor’s Business Awards are now in their 12th year and continue to attract record numbers of entries from a vast range of sectors and industries.

Cr Quirk congratulated all winners of the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards, announced at a gala dinner at Brisbane’s City Hall on Friday 27 October.

“Our award winners demonstrate the depth of talent, enterprising optimism and innovative mindset of our business community, who play a vital role in Brisbane’s success at a local and global level,” he said.
