Celebrations will be back in Brisbane this Australia Day

Brisbane residents, including our city’s newest citizens, will be treated to a fantastic Australia Day event in January, which will bring together the community through celebration.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner today announced that a $1 million grant from the National Australia Day Council and teaming up with the RNA Showgrounds had been the lifeline to make previously impossible Australia Day celebrations amidst COVID restrictions a reality.

“On Tuesday, 26 January, we will be hosting Celebrate Brisbane, which will be a vibrant community event at the RNA Showgrounds which will bring together people amidst a wonderful celebration of music, art, food and dance,” Cr Schrinner said.

“A real highlight of the day will be the major fireworks display at the end of the evening, which is possible due to the larger location at the showground.

“On Australia Day thousands of people will receive their citizenship at the traditional Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, and the family-friendly event at the showgrounds will follow.”

Cr Schrinner said being able to host Celebrate Brisbane after a tough year of COVID restrictions in 2020, will be a great way to start 2021.

“This event will be COVID-safe and will bring great benefits to local businesses as we bring people together to celebrate the diverse and inclusive community we have here in Brisbane,” he said.   

National Australia Day Council CEO, Karlie Brand, said the local government sector’s role in bringing communities together on our national day has never been more important. 

“That’s why the National Australia Day Council has provided $15 million in grants to Australian councils and not-for-profit organisations for Australia Day events in 2021,” she said. 
 
“The National Australia Day Council is delighted to be supporting Brisbane City Council to deliver an Australia Day that encourages its community to come together and reflect, respect and celebrate.”

The core mission of the National Australia Day Council is to actively promote our national day to all Australians to inspire national pride and increase participation and engagement across all sectors of the community.

Further event details, including headline entertainment acts and ticket details, will be released in the lead up to the event in the new year.

The event will be delivered by Brisbane City Council through the city’s economic development board, Brisbane Economic Development Agency.
