2020 BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AMBASSADORS

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has appointed 40 new Brisbane International Student Ambassadors today, empowering them to advocate for Brisbane as a superb study destination.

The Lord Mayor said that this years’ cohort of ambassadors would have an important role to play during the current coronavirus outbreak.

He said their work as a key communication channel to the wider international student community in Brisbane and to their networks back home would be invaluable.

“The Brisbane International Student Ambassador program is about creating awareness and consideration of Brisbane as one of the best places in the world to study,” Cr Schrinner said.

“With the 40 ambassadors hailing from more than 20 countries, they represent Brisbane’s strong and diverse international student community.

“Now, more than ever, it is important to have strong, positive voices in the international student community and our ambassadors will provide an extension of our support, pointing students in the right direction for official information and advice.”

The Lord Mayor said that in return for their advocacy of our city, wherever possible and safe to do so, the ambassadors would be presented with unique opportunities to experience Brisbane.

“We want our ambassadors to gain a good understanding of our culture and our lifestyle through experiences – both socially and professionally - that expand their skills and networks here,” he said.

“Each year we enlist a new cohort of inspiring ambassadors to showcase our city attributes to their networks and by doing so we not only increase our reach but also our influence.”

He said Brisbane was proud to have one of Australia’s most diverse student populations and one of the largest student ambassador programs in Australia.

“Brisbane has built a strong reputation as a world-class study destination, with more than 100,000 international students studying here in 2019,” he said.

“Over the past 11 years we’ve had 412 ambassadors from 79 nations, each with their own unique story to tell their family and friends about Brisbane, so you can imagine the ripple effect this has for the reputation of our city.

“Brisbane has world-class education institutions, accommodation and lifestyle opportunities that make it an incredibly attractive destination for students considering studying abroad.

“In 2019, international education was worth more than $3 billion to Brisbane’s economy, demonstrating the value of showcasing our city as a world-class place to live and study.”

The ambassadors are tasked with broadcasting their stay in Brisbane to more than a quarter of a million people through the Study Brisbane Facebook page and their own social media accounts.

This year’s cohort alone has a combined personal social media reach of more than 85,000 followers, demonstrating how far and wide the message is spread.
