Caroline McCulloch (above) – co-founder of FRANKiE4 footwear – has put her best foot forward to be named Channel 7 Business Person of the Year at the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the podiatrist and physiotherapist used her biomechanical knowledge to design fashionable but comfortable footwear for women.

“Orthopaedic shoes are often thought of as clunky and unattractive but Caroline’s designs have given them an image overhaul and transformed the industry,” Cr Quirk said.

“Caroline and her husband Alan own Brisbane podiatry clinics All Podiatry & The Shoe Co. They launched FRANKiE4 – named after their beloved dog – in 2011 with 200 pairs of shoes and now sell them throughout Australia and New Zealand, with Europe next.

“Under Caroline’s stewardship, the company is conscious of sourcing its leather ethically, as well as recycling its packaging and waste.

“Caroline is a stunning example of the sort of extraordinary people driving Brisbane’s economic growth and global reputation as Australia’s New World City.”

Winners of the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards were announced at a gala dinner at City Hall. Now in their 12th year, the 2017 awards attracted a record number of entries.

Other winners included Dr Christopher Jeffery, a 31-year-old former engineer and army officer turned cutting-edge roboticist, who was named Singapore Airlines Young Business Person of the Year.

“Dr Christopher Jeffery founded medical innovation company RER Labs in 2014 with Dr James Fielding,” Cr Quirk said.

“The pair use their medical background to identify problems, create innovative products to solve those problems and put profits into medical research.

“Dr Jeffery is also CEO of Field Orthopaedics, a multi-million-dollar medical device company, a doctor with Queensland Health and is completing his PhD researching bionics at QUT.”

The Optus Business Platinum Award went to The Print Bar, which also won the Australia TradeCoast Award for Outstanding Small Business.

“The Print Bar is run by an extraordinarily creative team of designers, artists and print specialists and has a well-deserved reputation for its print concepts, workshops, handy online printing options and screen-print art exhibitions,” Cr Quirk said.

Jeweller Wallace Bishop was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Wallace Bishop is a highly revered fixture in the Brisbane and Australian jewellery sectors,” Cr Quirk said

“Mr Bishop became a watchmaker in 1950 and, along with son Stuart, still heads a company now celebrating its 100th year. That’s a remarkable achievement and one I am very pleased to honour.”

Cr Quirk congratulated all winners of the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.

“Our award winners demonstrate the depth of talent, enterprising optimism and innovative mindset of our business community, who play a vital role in Brisbane’s success at a local and global level,” he said.
