Daily flights between Shanghai and Brisbane to drive future growth

Invest Brisbane General Manager Steven Silvester has welcomed the announcement by China Eastern Airlines to begin year-round daily services between Brisbane and Shanghai in December.

Mr Silvester said that while the visitor economy was an important driver of Brisbane's future growth, the opportunities for two-way trade and investment across a number of industry sectors would be greatly improved.

"Shanghai is a global financial hub and is emerging as a major technology hub in China. In close proximity to Shanghai are a number of major cities such as Wuxi, Nanjing, Suzhou and Hangzhou which have become home to major corporations, including Alibaba, Mr Silvester said.

"This announcement will be a major win for the city's visitor economy, but it will also provide opportunities across all of the growth sectors identified in The Brisbane 2022 New World City Action Plan. Brisbane wins any time there is an opportunity to be directly connected to a major international capital hub."

"Shanghai is an important economic, financial, trade and shipping centre in China and is also the country's most populous city. It contributes greatly to the nation's economic structure and development of society and is a key trading partner for Brisbane."

Brisbane Airport Corporation Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe said the move would be a major boost to Brisbane's economy.

"Connecting China's busiest international hub with Brisbane is a significant step for the city and state in positioning Brisbane as a major Asia Pacific centre," Ms Alroe said.

"These new services are a huge victory for the whole of Queensland and every sector of our economy, from business and commerce to tourism, trade, education and beyond."

The decision by China Eastern Airlines is also expected to be a major windfall for Brisbane's tourism economy. The Chinese visitor market, which is the second-largest for Brisbane Airport, has experienced 23 per cent growth in the past 12 months.

"Importantly, as China's second-largest airline, China Eastern offers a premium full service product trusted by high-yielding Chinese business and leisure travellers, who now spend $1.2 trillion globally on tourism," Ms Alroe said.
