Video: The science behind probiotic drink PERKii

IN THIS VIDEO: PERKii is a probiotic drink developed by University of Queensland scientists and commercialised by the university's business arm, UniQuest. Probiotic drinks are a $30 billion business but the majority of them are based in milk. The technology used in PERKii, ProGel, uses a seaweed-derived compound to coat the probiotics in a protective covering, which allows them to survive in acidic environments such as your stomach and fruit juices. This means PERKii probiotic drinks are tastier, come in a variety of flavours and are far more attractive to consumers. The ProGel microbeads that protect the probiotics are tiny – just 3 per cent of a millimetre in size.
