9 Reasons to Study in Brisbane
Our world-ranked education providers, perfect weather and proximity to some of the world's most beautiful natural wonders are just some of the reasons you'll love studying in Brisbane. Here are nine reasons why you should choose Brisbane as your international study destination.
1. It’s the capital of the sunshine state
Queensland isn’t called the Sunshine State for no reason. With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, Brisbane summers are famous for subtropical heat cooled by beautiful afternoon storms. Winter days rarely dip below 20°C, and there’s nothing quite like an afternoon nap in the winter sun.
In between, spring and autumn are particularly popular with students, especially around October when the jacarandas begin to bloom across the city – despite them being a sign that exams are looming.
2. Brisbane is affordable
Brisbane has one of the lowest costs of living in comparison with other Australian cities – from transport to accommodation to meals. That doesn’t mean there’s a compromise in quality, though. It just means that your dollar will go a lot further living in Brisbane than in our southern counterparts.
3. The student accommodation is world class
Brisbane offers a range of quality purpose-built student accommodation. Scattered throughout Brisbane to be easily accessible to all institutions, these residences provide support, facilities and a community to students from a variety of institutions.
4. The education providers are world-class, too
Brisbane offers international students some of Australia’s finest higher education institutions, including the award-winning University of Queensland and internationally renowned Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University. There are also a number of English language colleges, vocational education providers and schools from which to choose. Learn more about the types of study on offer in Brisbane here.
5. Your Australian bucket list is right on the doorstep
Centrally located, Brisbane is the best-positioned city to explore Australia’s big attractions, including the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, coastal beaches and Queensland’s famous theme parks. Brisbane is also just a short flight from some of Australia’s best known cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne.
6. It’s easy to get around
Commuting to and from classes has never been so simple. Eligible full-time uni, TAFE and post-secondary students can apply for a concession fare on TransLink public transport services (excluding Airtrain), regional qconnect bus services and approved regional ferry services. Brisbane students also receive a discount on bike hire with CityCycle. There’s even a free CityHopper ferry to jump between the city, South Bank and Kangaroo Point.
7. Brisbane is a safe and welcoming city
Brisbane is an inclusive study destination and is known as a safe and welcoming place to live. Events like the Lord Mayor’s International Student Friendship Ceremony, giving international students the chance to meet and have their photo taken with Brisbane’s Lord Mayor, and the City Welcome Festival, a city Orientation Day with free music, food and networking opportunities, have been very popular with international students.
8. Brisbane is a multicultural melting pot
An advantage of living in one of the world’s most multicultural countries is the variety of food and activities at your doorstep. The city’s diverse and inclusive community is reflected in its extensive calendar of events and festivals held throughout the year, which has included the popular Paniyiri Greek Festival, Australia’s largest Oktoberfest and BrisAsia festival.
9. Brisbane celebrates the arts
Brisbane is home to Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art – Australia’s largest Gallery of Modern Art. Explore Brisbane’s history in the Museum of Brisbane, housed in the iconic Brisbane City Hall, or see science come alive at the Queensland Museum. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre hosts world class theatre and music events, and Brisbane is the host city of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
